Casa Bijagua Cobano Puntarenas Costa Rica (2024-)

Casa Bijagua is a 1600 sq. ft one story house sited in a profuse tropical forest at the southern end of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. Surrounded by native vegetation and fruit trees, the house sits atop a leveled cornered area in its shaded, bucolic site. An L-shaped open porch further protects the living spaces while integrating a magnificent Higueron tree as a prominent design feature.
The house’s layout places all public spaces (living, kitchen, dining) on a south / north frontal orientation. A wide “zaguan” connects the three bedrooms while offering discreet views to two strategically placed narrow courts.
Constructed of local and readily available materials such as concrete masonry units, pre-weathered zinc sheets, teak, and cedar woods, Casa Bijagua is a solid, compact structure animated by subtle and precise patterns of light and air. The house exterior stucco walls are painted a mentholated green, adding another variant to the abundant, surrounding tonalities of green.
