Aapex Pharmacy, Houston, Texas (2019-2022)
Aapex, a DME provider, is a pharmacy specializing in compounding (non-sterile). A dilapidated warehouse in the Montrose area, formerly a storage facility and most recently used as a dance studio, was extensively remodeled to accommodate its new use and program. The warehouse was spared demolition by preserving the building’s original steel frame structure and concrete foundation. The 4,200 square foot volume was transformed and reconfigured to address the compounding, distribution and administration needs of Aapex. The building’s central nave contains most administrative activities. This two-story open volume is delineated by a high, north facing window that provides the enfilade of work stations with ample natural light and privacy. Other related functions such as the pharmacy itself, preparation, distribution and storage needs are placed to the back of the rectangular volume. Re-cladded with a similar metal paneling system as the original building, the new envelope is a more durable and brighter wall and roof system. The pharmacy is flanked by parking areas to the east and west and surrounded by newly planted live oak trees along its east and north street sides.
