Carlos Jiménez is recognized on the Nuestro Ambiente Visionaries Wall for a body of work that has shaped architectural discourse locally and internationally for more than four decades. Born in San José, Costa Rica, and based in Houston since the early 1980s, Jiménez founded Carlos Jiménez Studio in 1983 after earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston, where he received both Best Thesis and Best Portfolio awards.
His practice is widely known for its intellectual clarity, material restraint, and deep engagement with place. Jiménez’s built work spans cultural, educational, civic, and residential projects, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Central Administration and Junior School, the Peeler Art Center at DePauw University, the Spencer Studio Art Building at Williams College, Won Buddhism of Houston, and the Crowley House in Marfa, among many others.
Equally influential as an educator, Jiménez is a professor at Rice University and served as a visiting professor at institutions across the United States and abroad, including Harvard GSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley, SCI-Arc, and universities throughout Europe. From 2001 to 2011, he served on the jury of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and, in 2023, was inducted into the National Academy of Design.
Through teaching, practice, and mentorship, Carlos Jiménez continues to shape how architecture is understood, experienced, and advanced leaving a lasting impact on Houston and the global architectural community.
Nuestro Ambiente is now on view at Architecture Center Houston, extended through March 27.
